“The Risk of Gratefulness”

We don't get to choose in this life whether or not we suffer

But we do get to choose what we are willing to suffer for

We can suffer the darkness of a closed heart

Or from the wounds welcomed with an open heart

The wounds of one that risked the pain that comes with love

So I will take the risk of gratefulness

Of kindness, and good will, and hope for the best

And the leap of believing that I am fully accepted as I am

And that I have a place here
